Non-DJ wondering what you would recommend as a...
Nope.Right now I usually use two iPods (tankPOD and diPOD). When I started I mixed vinyl and tapes (usually employing tapes to trigger soundbites from movies and such) moved on to CDs (initially in two CD players (like you used to find in old stereos!) going through a mixer but eventually moving onto an actual CD mixer) and then finally on iPods.
I suppose I’m not against DJing with Traktor...

Some people seem sentimental about this, but it just gives me nightmares! The web was cool in 1995 but it was also pretty damn ugly! I consider this thinking to be in line with the current hipster ’80s fashion revival - something I was actually there for the first time around so I remember it actually being very uncool.

Someone—thankfully not me—has undertaken the laborious task of archiving every single show in its entirety. The 1986-1995 years are especially crucial: Sebadoh, The Fall, Red Aunts, The Muffs, Ramones, and The Dead Milkmen sandwiched between Soul Asylum, the Beastie Boys, Bjork, and R.E.M. A great way to kill an afternoon…or ten.

I agree with him on the “culture of being first” thing. It’s ridiculous and meaningless and is one of the things that has made writing a music blog way less fun since when I started.
Well, that would be why I always only write about bands I dig now — unless it’s something prominent I have to negatively review to save people from its horrors...

Are you better at dancing or singing?
Singing. I did actually front a band for a couple years. I’m not saying I was good, but my dancing scares small children, so I’m going to say the singing has to at least be a little better.

First record you remember reviewing...
I honestly don’t remember. It might have been Ned’s Atomic Dustbin’s debut. I do remember the first show I reviewed was actually an assignment to cover the BoDeans and the review I wrote elicited a handwritten two-page response mailed to me by an irate fan who could not BELIEVE I did not love the band.
So you could say I learned how to deal negative commenters early on.
