Catching up with Tankboy around the Interwebs. Sorry for the lame title; who even says “interwebs” anymore? Is that even remotely funny? I’m pretty sure it’s far past it’s expiration date. Oh well. Here’s a quick collection of links if you’re interested in seeing what I’ve been up to elsewhere online! SPIN released it’s list of the top 125...

Non-DJ wondering what you would recommend as a...
Nope.Right now I usually use two iPods (tankPOD and diPOD). When I started I mixed vinyl and tapes (usually employing tapes to trigger soundbites from movies and such) moved on to CDs (initially in two CD players (like you used to find in old stereos!) going through a mixer but eventually moving onto an actual CD mixer) and then finally on iPods. I suppose I’m not against DJing with Traktor...

Geocities-izer Gives The Web A Vintage Internet... →
Some people seem sentimental about this, but it just gives me nightmares! The web was cool in 1995 but it was also pretty damn ugly! I consider this thinking to be in line with the current hipster ’80s fashion revival - something I was actually there for the first time around so I remember it actually being very uncool. File under: misplaced sentimentality

Hdot Wells: On Free Energy and Beauty Bar. →
Saw these guys Friday at the new Beauty Bar in West Town, which was a gloriously good time. I mean, Clayton Hauck was there, so clearly it was very cutting-edge and kewl. But, more importantly, it was just raucous, carefree fun. Note on Beauty Bar: Despite being a primarily hipsterish… Interesting to see another view of the evening but she’s right, go see Free Energy! A bunch of...

What are your thoughts on today's Weezer. People...
My thoughts on today’s Weezer, well at least my most recent thoughts, are here: http://chicagoist.com/2009/11/03/rockin_our_turntable_weezer.php HOWEVER, if you really want some insight, why don’t you let Rivers Cuomo just explain himself? He does so right here: http://chicagoist.com/2010/02/19/rivers_cuomo_bares_soul_on_sound_op.php Go on folks, ask away.

What else did we forget? H.E.B. Then Giant. Then Dominick’s and Jewel. If my lineage was traced through the regional grocery stores in my life this would be it. At least this would be what I remember, since I can’t recall whether Giant was both in New Jersey and Maryland or just one or the other. And in each of these I would hunt out the one vice that connected me through every single...

I am mortal! I’ve mentioned it here in the past, but in case you’ve forgotten, I don’t really get hungover. I don’t know why, and I don’t really consider it to be a mark in the plus column since I don’t really pay the price for drinking too much and maybe it’d be better if I did! Anyhoo, I spent Saturday out drinking finer beers with my brothers who were...

The 120 Minutes Archive →
irockitumblr: contacthigh: weneverlearn: Someone—thankfully not me—has undertaken the laborious task of archiving every single show in its entirety. The 1986-1995 years are especially crucial: Sebadoh, The Fall, Red Aunts, The Muffs, Ramones, and The Dead Milkmen sandwiched between Soul Asylum, the Beastie Boys, Bjork, and R.E.M. A great way to kill an afternoon…or ten. Grew up on this....

Bitter Music Journalist Delivers Annual Anti-Music... →
irockitumblr: (via thecultureofme) I agree with him on the “culture of being first” thing. It’s ridiculous and meaningless and is one of the things that has made writing a music blog way less fun since when I started. Well, that would be why I always only write about bands I dig now — unless it’s something prominent I have to negatively review to save people from its horrors...

Are you better at dancing or singing?
Singing. I did actually front a band for a couple years. I’m not saying I was good, but my dancing scares small children, so I’m going to say the singing has to at least be a little better. Go on folks, ask away.

First record you remember reviewing...
I honestly don’t remember. It might have been Ned’s Atomic Dustbin’s debut. I do remember the first show I reviewed was actually an assignment to cover the BoDeans and the review I wrote elicited a handwritten two-page response mailed to me by an irate fan who could not BELIEVE I did not love the band. So you could say I learned how to deal negative commenters early on. Go...

Wanna lose weight? There’s an app for that! I’m going to keep this somewhat short and sweet, but if you’re one of the folks out there looking to shed a few pounds without buying into some program or spending all of your dough on special meals or pre-planned menus, I may have a solution for you. But first, a preface. A few years ago I realized I had slowly put on quite a bit of weight. I’ve always...

Blur and other Record Store Day goodies!
I was excited to learn that Blur’s first single in many years would be a Record Store Day exclusive, but I was sad to hear it was limited to 1000 copies and would only be distributed in the U.K. The band realizes that fans all over the world are rabid for new material so they have posted the new single on their site as a free download. Get it! My only actual purchase this year was the...

Tweet of the week, you’ll laugh so hard you’ll cry. So back in the dark ages of the internet (read: mid-’90s) I was part of a rather vocal Pavement discussion group. It ended up spawning quite a few of the more prominent voices you see critiquing music today, and while the threads of that group unraveled after the band broke up, many of them were woven back together through P2P...
