The only thing I would add is that if you have aspirations to land a full-time job at a major publication in this space you should probably not turn down other opportunities waiting for that. In my opinion, and this holds ESPECIALLY true for rock writers, once the people currently hold those positions die / retire, those positions will disappear. Or be filled with a bunch of freelancers or a team...
